Enigma

I love you as a stranded ship on the beach
Where a dead body glistens on the shore.
And while the moonlight gives a form to each.
I hear the formless jungle's distant roar.

My thoughts of you are like the nameless clutter
Of wavelets twinkling on the ocean's tide;
Ten thousand dumb for every one I utter -
Dumb as this drowned man lying on his side.

The cliff that rises by the water's edge -
Were I there, looking down upon the sea,
I could not know, on peering from its ledge,
Whether the body was my love, or me.
